Future Development
There is still a fair amount of work to be done before the Waypoints system is ready for deployment. Using results from our usability analysis, development of the interactive prototype should continue while taking into consideration the consistency, user control, and visibility violations found in the heuristic evaluation. Improvements noted in the sample forms section should be developed and tested in upcoming usability sessions while our "to-do" list of development ideas/needs is addressed.
Though not an all inclusive list, this includes:
Data cleanup. Despite our best efforts to create and load data into the system, we have come across a few typographical errors and erroneous metadata assocations that need to be corrected.
Admin UI development. The metadata entry interface needs further analysis so that an intuitive interface can be developed. User testing revealed that adding a record to the collection is intuitive to test subjects; however, adding descriptive metadata to the same file proved troublesome for everyone involved.
Development of a more complete controlled vocabulary. A more robust descriptive (facet) vocabulary needs to be developed. This controlled vocabulary could then serve as the means for describing all of the collections' contents and could serve as a mechanism for automatic metadata generation.
Implementation of user accounts. Though current data entry and updates are done using phpMyAdmin and command line interfaces, user accounts will be an important part of data administration as development continues.
Database security and optimization. As data is added to the system, the database will require some changes in order to optimize resources and secure the system is secure.
Data sharing, standards, and protocols. In order to maximize the possibility of data exchange/reuse, we aim to create record export functionality in MARC bibliographic and potentially other formats.
Improved search capabilities.
